I enjoy working in churches that wish to develop their musical programs to enhance spiritual life. It is essential to have the backing of the church staff and congregation in developing these programs and share a common vision toward which everyone can work. I find that music in the church enhances the spirituality of the congregation while providing a social and musical environment for the choir members to "work" in.
It is essential that the choir members understand the music that they are singing and how the text relates to the church, its activities, and its beliefs. It is through music that many people find their place in a church and understanding the text is a key link to spiritual growth. At choir rehearsals, I believe it is important to find a balance between socializing and work. Too much work will not encourage new choir membership and result in dull rehearsals, while too much socializing will prevent work from getting done for pieces that must be sung in the near future.
I believe musicians in a Lutheran church service are called to a higher level than simply performers. They are worship leaders and part of the worship team and process. This distinction carries a tremendous amount of responsibility but places an emphasis on the primary focus: worship. The three year lectionary cycle guides my musical selections and informs my teaching when working with the volunteers that form the music ministry at Gloria Dei.
